The Flying Shirt

Hello and welcome to episode 58 of My True Go Stories. It's Halloween season, the veil is thinning, and the story I'm going to tell you today is one of my more spooky stories, if not the spookiest story that has ever happened in my life. The story takes place when I was 10 years old, and I was having a sleepover at my friend Katie's house. Now I don't remember much about the details of that day besides the spooky thing that happened, but I do know that I arrived there and the sun was still up. I know I arrived there in the afternoon, even though it was a sleepover, I got there in the afternoon.
So Katie and I made some decisions about what we were going to do, and we probably played some games and played with Barbies. We were really into Barbies. We probably did all of that stuff. But eventually we decided to have a say on it. Now, being that we were only 10 years old, we didn't really know anyone who was dead.
Both of our grandparents were all alive and our parents and aunts, uncles, everybody. So we didn't actually know anyone who was dead, but we wanted to summon the spirit of somebody. And all I remember is that George Washington's birthday had just passed. And Katie and I said, I don't know anyone who's dead. I don't know anyone who's dead.
Wait a minute. George Washington is dead. He's definitely dead. And so we decided to have a say on where we would summon the spirit of George Washington. So back in those days, one of the things we would do in elementary school was to honor the president's, whose birthday it was, by cutting out the shape of their profile from construction paper.
And then we would glue it to another piece of construction paper. So we had at Katie's house this cut out of George Washington's profile in blue construction paper. And I remember these colors and it was glued onto a red piece of construction paper. So preparing for this say on, we got that piece of paper, that outline of George Washington, and we put it down on the floor between us. And then we sat cross-legged across from it.
And then Katie had this little drum set. So we each took one of the drumsticks. It was like a little plastic mallet. And we each held one of the drumsticks. And we sat on either side of the profile of George Washington.
And then we decided we would speak in like a chanting type of voice. We couldn't just say it. We had to chant it. And so we started saying, oh George Washington, oh George Washington, come to us George Washington. And while we did this chanting, we were hitting the picture of George Washington with these drumsticks, which wasn't really very nice.
But I don't know. We decided that that was what we were going to do. So we're hitting the outline of George Washington's face with our drumsticks and we're chanting, oh George Washington, oh George Washington, come to us. And at one point Katie hit the picture so hard that the drumstick went through the paper. And we just thought that was hilarious.
And eventually we just lost interest in the say on, and I don't know if she threw that now ripped profile of George Washington. And we had to put that stuff away and went on to something else. We had dinner probably, like I said, I don't remember much about that sleepover except for the say on. We put up a jama-zon and we stayed together in Katie's room in her single bed. We fell asleep and it was in the middle of the night.
It was very dark and I woke up and there was a little bit of ambient light coming in from the street lights outside. And I don't know why I woke up but I did wake up and I opened my eyes and I let them adjust to this very low light that was in there. Katie was sound asleep next to me and it looked up at the ceiling and on the ceiling I saw a shirt hanging as if it was on a coat hanger. It was a long-sleeved t-shirt and it had stripes around the waist and stars on the chest. And it was sort of hanging down but it was not like in the closet or on a coat rack or anything.
It was all the way up on the ceiling and I looked at it and as I looked at it it started to move in like little circles around the ceiling as if it were being blown by a wind except it retained the shape as if it were on a coat hanger. So it wasn't blowing around the room. It was sort of moving around the room and I couldn't see a coat hanger. This shirt was just floating around the room. And I was very confused about why is there a shirt on a coat hanger hanging from Katie's ceiling and why is it moving around the ceiling?
How could it, how could any of this be? And I couldn't fathom what was going on. And then the shirt started to move faster and faster and faster in this circle and then it came down from the ceiling and came rushing towards my face. And the sleeves came out in front of it and we're making these fast snake-like moves in my face. As if someone were trying to harass me or bother me.
It was making snake-like movements in my face. This is the only time in the history of this podcast that I wish that I had a video so that I could show you what this shirt was doing. But just try and picture the sleeves of the shirt coming forward and making snake-like movements very fast right in my face. And I started screaming, turn on the light, turn on the light and I was hitting my friend Katie and she was waking up very slowly way too slowly. The light was over on her side of the bed so I was screaming at her to turn on the light.
And as soon as I started yelling turn on the light, the shirt retreated from my face and then it went up into a little recession that was up above the windows. And it was almost like it was hiding there and I could see it. It was pressed up against the wall and the sleeves were coming out over the top of the windowsill and the sleeves were moving. And I was looking at it, still screaming, turn on the light and then Katie turned on the light and as soon as she turned on the light that shirt was gone. But that shirt was there before she turned on the light.
I know it. I was awake and that shirt was waving its arms in my face. The next morning I tried to tell Katie's mother about it and she said, oh that's ridiculous. And then she said, I wish the shirts would fly in this house. What a help with the laundry that would be.
I could just tell all the shirts to fly down the stairs and throw themselves into the washing machine. And I sort of pretended that I was joking around with her and I laughed at this and I agreed that yes, it was probably just a dream, but it was not a dream. That really happened. That shirt was waving its arms in my face. And I can't even begin to describe to you the lasting horror that that experience was for me.
It was completely unexplainable. A shirt was floating around the ceiling and the shirt aggressively came up into my face and waved its arms aggressively into my face. And that image has remained with me to today to the point that I put off telling this story because it's so scary to me still. Now I'm a medium and I see ghosts all the time, but I see them in my mind's eye because I have a theory that the universe has always had this intention for me that I will talk to ghosts and send up ghosts. Which if you've been listening to this podcast, you know that that's what I do.
I talk to ghosts and I send them up. But I think that the universe possibly saw my screaming reaction to this ghost and said, okay, don't shower the ghosts. The universe has chosen to show me a little bit of movement out of the corner of my eye and then a mental picture of who the person is. Because that I can handle. After Katie's mother's reaction, I decided that I wasn't going to tell any more grownups and I was going to try to convince myself that it was just a dream.
But I know that it was not just a dream. So as an adult, you know, like recently, I told my father this story and my father believes that it was the actual ghost of George Washington. The first thing that might imply that would be that the shirt had stars and stripes on it. Sort of a modern day version of what George Washington might wear if he were alive today. And the second reason and possibly the most compelling is that apparently George Washington was a really grumpy guy who did not like to be bothered.
So I'm imagining that Katie and I had this saiyans and we were calling him over and over and over again with an image of him and that it worked. And maybe his spirit actually came to Katie's bedroom there in New Jersey and said, oh yeah. And I'm just imagining his anger and maybe he just came up. Oh, there's the one who was calling me. Let me get up in her face and say, okay, you want to see George Washington?
Here's George Washington. Well, he waves his arms in my face. I don't know, but it is definitely a possibility because we really did try to bother him. And that's the explanation that I'm going to go with, that it was the actual ghost of George Washington that we conjured up with that saiyans. I know it's possible that we conjured up some other ghost who just happened to hear us calling and decided to come on in.
But I think that it was indeed George Washington. And I would like to apologize to George Washington for bothering him. And I promise to never do it again. So happy Halloween everybody.
